A water softener is a mechanical appliance that is plumbed into your home's water supply system.The system trades the minerals for sodium or potassium.
The Parts:
The heart of a water softener is a mineral tank filled with small polystyrene beads, also known as resin.
The brine tank uses common salt to create a brine solution used to flush calcium and magnesium out of the hard water.
Ion Exchange:
Hard water moves into the mineral tank, calcium and magnesium cling to the beads replacing the salt.

3-Phase Regenerating Cycle:
1. Flush out dirt
2. Sodium rich solution is carried from the brine tank through the mineral tank
3. Excess brine is flushed and the tank is refilled
